Free School Meals
All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to a free school meal through the Universal Infant Free School Meals program.
From September 2026, free school meal eligibility has been expanded. Children from households receiving Universal Credit are now eligible for free school meals, regardless of household income.
If your child is in Year 3 or above and your household receives Universal Credit, you should apply to check your eligibility.
Why should I apply?
Even if your child already receives a free school meal because they are in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, it is still important to apply if you think you may be eligible.
Registering for benefits-based Free School Meals can:
Provide your child with a free school meal beyond Year 2
Help the school receive additional Pupil Premium funding
Help eligible families access other support and assistance
Nursery
Children attending a maintained nursery class or maintained nursery school may be eligible for free school meals if they attend for a full day and meet the eligibility criteria. Children attending a private nursery are not eligible for Free School Meals through this scheme.
